Virginia Creeper – Parthenocissus quinquefolia

This is a vigorous, self-clinging deciduous climber which adheres firmly to slightly rough surfaces by means of disc-shaped suckers at the ends of branched tendrils. The glossy green leaves colour to scarlet, yellow and purple in autumn. It has insignificant greenish yellow flowers, followed by bunches of blue black berries resembling tiny grapes.

It is fast growing. Jesse grew Virginia Creeper on his front veranda some years ago, where he trained the tendrils to trail downwards during summer to protect the house from the morning sun. The dappled sun then shone through in the mornings which was just delightful.

Beautiful green foliage in summer turning to a blaze of orange/red in autumn.
